Our History
Haymarket Motors, at 15161 Washington Street in Haymarket, VA, opened for business as a full service garage on January 9, 2000. Fred Karl owns and operates the business.
In 1968, Fred Karl opened his first automotive facility in Maryland servicing Prince George’s County Several years later, he expanded to Montgomery County where he operated a full service gas station in Sandy Springs, MD. However, it was in the towns of Rockville and Gaithersburg, that Fred began to carve out his niche. In the 1970’s, when full service gas stations were closing at an alarming rate due to the gas crisis, Fred was able to stay in business because he had a well established clientele and good business sense.
Fred ran a thriving business due to very long hours and much dedication to his customers. He became well known for solving the most difficult car problems. Fred’s educational background aided him in learning as much as possible about the new computer controlled vehicles that other technicians were intimidated by. So this began his loyal following. In 1999, Fred sold his Maryland property due to the King Farm expansion and relocated to Virginia.

Fred Karl has enjoyed a full life but intends to add some chapters. He was raised in Alaska where he worked aboard fishing boats and at a crab and salmanon cannery. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam after graduating from New York Technical Institute for Auto Mechanics. He and his wife, Denise have lived in Haymarket for more than 20 years. They have three daughters and five grandchildren.
